Hong Kong's Secretary for Security, Chris Tang, announced that the police force is finalizing agreements with private shopping centers to connect their security cameras to the government's AI-powered SmartView surveillance system. The initiative aims to incorporate approximately 60,000 cameras into this integrated network by 2028. Tang stated that the project is intended to improve public safety and address concerns regarding crime in certain areas. The level of police access, whether involving continuous live monitoring or retrospective data retrieval, will be determined based on the specific security risks associated with each location. This effort is part of a broader expansion of the city's surveillance capabilities, which may eventually include the implementation of facial recognition technology.
