Tung Chee-hwa, who served as the inaugural chief executive of Hong Kong following the 1997 handover to China, has died at the age of 89. His office confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, with family members present. Beyond his historic role in leading the city's transition under the 'one country, two systems' framework, Tung also held the position of vice-chairman for the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the nation's primary political advisory organization. Tributes have begun to emerge for the former leader, who remained a significant figure in regional politics for decades. His passing marks the end of a notable chapter in Hong Kong's post-colonial history.
