Governor Kathy Hochul has officially signed an executive order establishing a state of disaster emergency in New York due to a significant increase in measles infections. This marks the first time a U.S. state has taken such a measure since the current wave of cases began in 2025. Official data indicates that 108 residents have contracted the virus so far this year. Notably, 92 of these infections occurred after July 15, primarily impacting rural areas with lower vaccination rates across 18 different counties. The emergency declaration is intended to facilitate a more robust response to the ongoing public health challenge.
