The Armed Forces of the Philippines is implementing plans to enhance the habitability of the BRP Sierra Madre, a military vessel stationed at Ayungin Shoal. Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad confirmed that maintenance budgets have been designated to support the aging ship, which serves as a strategic outpost within the nation's exclusive economic zone. Despite its worn appearance, officials maintain the vessel is structurally sound and will continue its mission. Originally commissioned in the 1940s, the ship was intentionally grounded in 1999 to bolster Philippine territorial claims. Military leadership cautioned that any external attempts to remove the vessel by force would be viewed as a hostile act, potentially triggering discussions regarding the country's mutual defense obligations.
