Saudi Arabia has temporarily halted operations on its East-West pipeline following a drone strike on the critical infrastructure. Officials in both Riyadh and Baghdad indicated that the aerial assault originated from Iraq, where militias supported by Iran are active. In response to the incident, Iraqi authorities have dismissed a military commander. The 1,200-kilometer pipeline serves as a vital route for Saudi crude, allowing the kingdom to transport between 4 million and 5 million barrels daily, which accounts for approximately 4 to 5 percent of the global oil supply. This conduit is particularly important as it provides an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker movement has been significantly impeded by ongoing regional tensions. The Saudi energy ministry stated that the closure is a precautionary measure to ensure safety while the situation remains volatile.
