This response followed an inquiry from Workers' Party Member of Parliament Gerald Giam regarding the potential implementation of pharmacological anti-androgen treatments and a sex offender registry to deter recidivism. While acknowledging the government's grave concern regarding the rise in reported sexual assaults, particularly those involving minors, Shanmugam noted that current data remains inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of chemical castration. Consequently, the authorities continue to monitor the situation and evaluate whether such measures would yield tangible results in lowering crime rates before considering any formal policy changes.
