South Korean pharmaceutical firm SK Bioscience has announced its participation in a collaborative effort to create a vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus. This initiative is supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, an agency under the US Department of Health and Human Services, which has pledged up to $99 million for the project. Initial funding of $36 million has already been secured to support the work of IAVI and Hilleman Laboratories, both of which are nonprofit research entities. The development program aims to combat BDBV outbreaks, which have primarily affected the Democratic Republic of the Congo and surrounding regions. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific medical treatments available to address this viral infection, making the development of a preventative solution a critical public health priority.
