A family court in Seoul has mandated that Kwon Hyuk-bin, the founder of the prominent gaming firm Smilegate, must provide his former spouse with a record-breaking divorce settlement. The ruling requires Kwon to transfer a 35 percent equity stake in his company, valued at approximately 2.5 trillion won, along with a cash payment of 65 billion won. This total exceeds 2 trillion won, making it the most substantial asset division in South Korean history. The previous record was held by the SK Group chairman's settlement. Kwon’s ex-wife, identified as Lee, initiated the legal proceedings in late 2022, claiming a significant share of the business assets. Smilegate, established by Kwon in 2002, has grown into a major player in the global video game industry. The court's decision reflects the substantial contribution of the spouse to the accumulation of wealth during the marriage.
