During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa expressed strong opposition to the government's new Organized Crime Prevention Bill. The opposition lawmaker, who attended the session while in remand custody, argued that the legislation might facilitate a return to the state-sponsored violence and suppression experienced during the late 1980s. Rajapaksa specifically challenged provisions that would allow authorities to detain individuals based on physical characteristics, such as tattoos associated with criminal organizations. He contended that existing legal frameworks are sufficient and suggested that the proposed measures are a facade for introducing broader repressive powers. The MP cautioned that the law could lead to arbitrary targeting of citizens based on their appearance rather than criminal actions.
