A police sergeant stationed at the Malwathuhiripitiya precinct has been placed under suspension due to accusations of soliciting a bribe. The officer allegedly demanded payment to assist in granting bail to a suspect detained on September 26, 2026. This disciplinary action was initiated after a video recording of the interaction was widely shared across social media platforms. An inquiry led by the Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Gampaha Division 04 confirmed the grounds for the suspension. Currently, the Senior Superintendent of Police is overseeing an additional preliminary investigation to further examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The authorities have acted swiftly to address the misconduct allegations following the public circulation of the incriminating footage.
