The Supreme Court of India has turned down a petition from Abu Salem, who sought an early exit from his prison sentence related to the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings. Salem argued that his time spent in custody as an undertrial and credits earned for good behavior should be factored into his 25-year sentence calculation. In 2017, a special court sentenced him to life imprisonment for his involvement in the attacks, which resulted in over 250 fatalities. Salem was brought to India from Portugal in 2005 following an extradition agreement. His legal challenge specifically referenced the conditions established within that treaty regarding his incarceration period. The court's decision maintains his current status, rejecting his claim for a shortened term of imprisonment.
