During his National Day address, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te stated that the government is raising military expenditure to discourage potential aggression. Facing persistent territorial claims and threats of annexation from Beijing, the island nation is prioritizing the enhancement of its defensive capabilities. President Lai emphasized that these investments are intended to maintain peace and deter conflict rather than provoke hostilities. To demonstrate its commitment to self-defence and improve operational readiness against a possible invasion, the administration has allocated a record NT$1.1 trillion for the 2027 defence budget. This figure represents over three percent of the island's gross domestic product, reflecting a long-term strategy adopted by successive governments to safeguard the democratic territory and signal resolve to international partners like the United States.
