A Bangkok court has denied a legal petition filed by Chinese journalist Bai Zhaodong, who sought to contest his ongoing detention by Thai immigration officials. Bai, a 56-year-old recognized by the United Nations as a refugee, fled China in 2023 and arrived in Thailand the following year. He has been held in an immigration facility since January. The court's decision follows the initiation of formal extradition proceedings by Thai prosecutors, who arrested Bai on Thursday based on a warrant issued by Beijing. Following his arrest, the journalist was transferred from the immigration center to a remand prison. The court hearing, which had been arranged several weeks in advance, concluded with the dismissal of his challenge against the legality of his confinement.
