Davlat Toshev, an artist currently in residence at the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, emphasizes that the survival of traditional arts depends on active practice and education rather than mere museum preservation. Toshev has dedicated his professional life to protecting the cultural legacy of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. A primary focus of his work is the revival of Abru-Bahor, a historic technique that blends paper marbling with intricate miniature painting. Often referred to as the “Spring Cloud” method, this art form was nearing extinction before Toshev intervened to restore it. By teaching these specialized skills, he aims to ensure that this unique aspect of Uzbek heritage remains a living tradition for future generations to learn and adapt.
