Renowned graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister is challenging the industry's current preoccupation with purely functional problem-solving. During the Herald Design Lounge 2026, the Austrian-born artist argued that creating practical items, such as legible posters or ergonomic furniture, is a basic expectation for any skilled professional rather than a notable achievement. Sagmeister contends that the design field has become overly fixated on utility, neglecting the essential pursuit of beauty. He suggests that true creative effort begins when a designer moves beyond simple functionality to prioritize aesthetic value. Known for his iconic album cover work for legendary acts like the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, and Talking Heads, Sagmeister is now urging his peers to shift their creative philosophy toward elevating the visual quality of their output.
