West Bengal leader Suvendu Adhikari has called for the detention of individuals who burned images of religious figure Dhirendra Shastri. The protests were sparked by Shastri’s recent comments advocating for a ban on non-vegetarian food near Durga Puja celebrations. During a religious gathering in Liluah, the Bageshwar Dham temple head expressed disapproval of meat consumption during the festival, which runs from October 6 to October 10. Adhikari defended the cleric, arguing that Shastri was merely expressing a personal opinion rather than enforcing a mandate. The controversy highlights a cultural divide, as meat consumption and animal sacrifice are traditional practices for many Bengali Hindus during the Durga Puja period. The call for arrests follows public demonstrations against the cleric's attempt to restrict dietary habits associated with the upcoming festivities.
