According to data from the European climate service Copernicus, August 2026 has been identified as the hottest August ever documented. Global surface temperatures averaged 16.96°C, which is 0.85°C higher than the 1991–2020 baseline. This figure nearly matches the record set in July 2023, with a variance of less than 0.01°C. Notably, this month saw global temperatures climb 1.65°C above pre-industrial levels, marking the first time since November 2025 that the 1.5°C threshold has been surpassed. The extreme heat was not limited to landmasses, as sea surface temperatures in non-polar regions also reached a record high of 21.07°C during the same period.
