Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro is scheduled to head a two-day humanitarian initiative in Myanmar from October 28 to 29. Serving as the Special Envoy for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chairman, Lazaro aims to assist in finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political instability within the country. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed her to this role in preparation for the Philippines' upcoming ASEAN chairmanship in 2026. While the mission focuses on humanitarian aid, it remains unclear if the envoy will hold discussions with detained opposition figure Aung San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi has faced multiple periods of detention, including her initial house arrest in 1989 and a subsequent re-arrest following the 2021 military coup. The Department of Foreign Affairs has not confirmed any scheduled meetings with the opposition leader at this time.
