Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, traveled to Jakarta on October 27 for a scheduled meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir at the Pancasila building. The diplomatic engagement occurs during a period of bilateral friction concerning regional air quality issues caused by Indonesian forest fires and a recent reduction in natural gas exports from Indonesia to Singapore. Starting October 24, Indonesia decreased its gas shipments by approximately 31 million standard cubic feet per day, representing an eight percent drop in supply from that source. Despite these developments, Singaporean officials, including Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, have reassured the public that the nation maintains adequate energy reserves. The impact of the reduced Indonesian gas supply is estimated to account for less than two percent of Singapore's total daily requirements.
