The Royal Malaysia Police have identified a growing trend where criminal syndicates recruit ordinary citizens to act as drug mules for transporting cannabis flowers to Europe. According to Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, director of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, the high demand for cannabis in European markets has driven this illicit activity. While there have been isolated reports of aviation personnel involvement, such as a co-pilot apprehended in Indonesia, authorities clarified that these cases are rare and often involve different transit routes like Australia. The majority of air-based smuggling operations to Europe rely on unsuspecting or coerced members of the public rather than professional pilots. Police officials disclosed these findings during a visit to the Bachok Narcotics Rehabilitation Centre, highlighting the ongoing efforts to disrupt these international trafficking networks.
