A recent analysis by maritime risk consultancy Ambrey indicates a significant increase in war-related hazards within the Black Sea. Between March and August 2026, the number of drones and unexploded munitions identified in the territorial waters of Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria climbed to 40, compared to 13 in the preceding six-month period. Across the entire Black Sea region, total sightings reached 56 during this timeframe, with additional incidents recorded in early September. These objects, which include aerial drones, unmanned surface vessels, and various explosives, have been found drifting, grounded, or washed up on coastlines. Ambrey noted that at least one-third of the recovered items contained active payloads, posing a persistent threat to regional maritime safety as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to impact surrounding waters.
