This decision follows significant backlash regarding his participation in a job interview for a position at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, which occurred shortly after he began his second four-year term in May. Kao acknowledged that his previous attempts to explain his actions, which cited personal curiosity and cultural misunderstandings, were insufficient and failed to address the concerns of the university community. The president expressed regret for failing to meet the expectations of faculty and staff who recently re-elected him. In response to the ongoing controversy, an oversight committee has initiated an investigation into his leave records and the timeline of his job search. Kao has stated he will fully cooperate with the inquiry and accepts the criticism directed toward his leadership.
