Pakistan is experiencing significant instability in fuel costs throughout 2026, placing a heavy burden on consumer finances. As of October 10, petrol reached Rs398.30 per litre, while diesel was priced at Rs396.24. Since the implementation of a daily pricing mechanism on July 21, petrol has undergone 35 price hikes and 22 reductions, with diesel experiencing 34 increases and 23 decreases. Historical data indicates that prices peaked in early April, with petrol hitting Rs458.41 and diesel reaching Rs520.35. These constant shifts are driven by a combination of global oil market trends, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, fluctuating import expenses, and the performance of the Pakistani rupee. Additionally, government tax collections and petroleum levies continue to play a role in the final pricing structure, further complicating the economic landscape for the public.
