Rescue operations are currently underway near Coron, Palawan, following a devastating fire aboard the M/V June Aster ferry. The vessel, which originated from Manila, caught fire on Wednesday evening, resulting in at least five confirmed fatalities. According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the blaze spread with extreme speed, leaving passengers little time to react or secure safety equipment. Currently, 84 individuals, including the captain and chief engineer, remain missing. Rescuers are facing significant challenges due to heavy smoke emanating from the smouldering wreckage, which is located approximately one kilometer from the coast. Survivors reported that the incident escalated rapidly following a loud explosion, making emergency evacuation difficult. Authorities are continuing their search efforts despite the hazardous conditions surrounding the damaged ship.
