The Philippine government announced a substantial rise in the number of Chinese naval and coast guard vessels operating within its claimed maritime territories during September. Authorities recorded 101 Chinese ships near key locations, including Thitu Island, Second Thomas Shoal, and Sabina Shoal, marking a near-doubling of presence compared to previous periods. This escalation coincides with a recent maritime confrontation involving the evacuation of an ill sailor near a contested shoal. Beijing continues to assert sovereignty over the vast majority of the South China Sea, disregarding a prior international legal ruling that invalidated its expansive claims. These ongoing territorial disputes have frequently resulted in tense encounters, collisions, and physical damage to vessels, heightening regional security concerns as both nations maintain a persistent presence in these strategic waters.
