The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT), working alongside the King Saud Medical City donation unit, has successfully conducted the nation's inaugural corneal retrieval from a donor following cardiac death. These tissues were subsequently transferred to the Eye Bank at King Abdulaziz Medical City for professional assessment and preservation, adhering to established medical protocols. This operation represents the primary achievement of a pilot program initiated on August 10, 2026, which seeks to increase the availability of corneal donations and improve long-term supply chains for sight-restoring procedures. Dr. Talal Algoufi, the Director General of SCOT, praised the medical staff involved in this milestone and highlighted the importance of this initiative in supporting patients who require transplant surgeries.
