German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz conducted his inaugural official visit to Singapore, meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at Parliament House on October 27. The two leaders reaffirmed the robust diplomatic relationship between their nations. A key outcome of the visit was the introduction of a refreshed Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership, alongside the unveiling of a Joint Work Plan covering the years 2027 and 2028. This roadmap serves as a successor to the 2025-2026 plan and establishes a structured approach for bilateral collaboration. The agreement focuses on five primary sectors: political affairs, defense, security and intelligence, trade and investment, and urban development and digitalization. This initiative aims to deepen the existing ties between Singapore and Germany through coordinated efforts in these critical areas of governance and economic development.
