A 28-year-old woman and her 34-year-old husband have received prison sentences in Singapore for smuggling puppies from Malaysia and keeping them at their residence for online sales. This marks a legal milestone as they are among the first individuals in the nation to be incarcerated for maintaining animals in captivity for commercial pet trade purposes. The couple's illicit activities were uncovered in December 2023 after authorities intercepted five Pomeranian puppies in a vehicle at the Woodlands Checkpoint. The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old associate, was linked to the pair. In a separate legal development, another man was handed the most severe sentence recorded thus far for keeping 13 smuggled animals at his home. These cases highlight the ongoing enforcement efforts by Singaporean authorities against the illegal importation and unauthorized housing of pets.
