A record number of 65 local government units, comprising 40 cities and 25 municipalities, have entered the 2026 Manila Times Philippine Model Cities and Municipalities Awards. This participation marks a significant rise from the previous year, which saw 48 entries. The evaluation process officially commenced on September 10. According to Blanca Mercado, President and COO of The Manila Times, the initiative aims to encourage local leaders to foster urban development that balances economic progress with environmental sustainability. The awards program seeks to promote the creation of resilient and future-oriented communities capable of addressing modern challenges, such as natural disasters and environmental hazards, which have recently impacted various regions across the country.
