A report from the newspaper Haaretz has exposed a pattern of systemic violence against Palestinian inmates at Ketziot Prison. WhatsApp messages exchanged between guards, alongside investigative testimony, detail a 2023 incident that resulted in the death of Thaer Abu Asab. The communications show guards boasting about severe beatings and mocking the medical emergencies of prisoners. Prosecutors have since charged 12 prison staff members for the assault on Abu Asab and other detainees. Testimonies suggest that the violence was encouraged by leadership, with guards claiming they were given a free hand to retaliate against prisoners. These revelations highlight a culture of abuse, where staff members openly discussed using batons and physical force as a routine practice, further corroborated by internal investigations into the prison's operations.
