Dhaka officials indicated that the invitation was issued to Rahman in his capacity as the BIMSTEC chair rather than as the head of government, leading to his decision not to attend. Authorities in Bangladesh stated that they are evaluating these agreements to prioritize national sovereignty and domestic interests, specifically targeting policies perceived as unfair, such as those concerning port access for foreign vessels. Furthermore, the government emphasized that future bilateral relations will be managed with a focus on mutual respect and national welfare, while also noting that discussions regarding the upcoming expiration of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty remain a significant priority for the administration.
