Within a 24-hour period, two individuals facing criminal charges were killed during alleged shootouts with law enforcement in West Bengal. In Murshidabad district, Samiul Sheikh, the primary suspect in the killing of BJP member Sujit Mondal, died during a police operation. Authorities stated that Sheikh was being escorted by the Criminal Investigation Department to a location for crime scene reconstruction when he reportedly attempted to flee. According to police accounts, the suspect seized an officer's weapon and initiated gunfire, leading to a fatal retaliatory response. Sheikh had been detained following the disappearance of Mondal in late August, whose remains were subsequently discovered in a canal. This incident marks the second such fatality involving a suspect in police custody within the state over the same timeframe.
