Syahganda Nainggolan, head of Indonesia's Government Communications Agency, has addressed regional concerns regarding transboundary haze affecting Singapore and Malaysia. During a press briefing on October 10, he characterized the ongoing forest and land fires as a natural phenomenon that exceeds human control. Nainggolan emphasized that the Indonesian government is actively communicating with its neighbors to explain the situation and the mitigation strategies currently in place. Furthermore, he noted that Indonesia’s forests provide essential oxygen to the region during periods without haze, suggesting that the environmental contribution of the country should be considered alongside the current smoke issues. The official also confirmed that discussions are underway with Malaysian leadership, including a recent diplomatic engagement involving Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, to manage the regional impact of the fires.
